Hebrews 8
Chapter 8 is the shortest chapter in the Book of Hebrews in terms of number of verses. It begins with a summary of the arguments made in the previous chapters.
!)BETTER COVENANT:
(i)Sanctuary:In the Old Covenant,
the Tabernacle was constructed according to the pattern shown by God to Moses in Mt.Sinai.
(Ex.25:40;Num.8:4)That Tabernacle was an example and shadow of the heavenly things.(v5)The Tabernacle was made by Bezaleel and Aholiab and those persons who were given wisdom in their hearts.
(Ex.31:1-5)Jesus Christ ministered in the true, greater and more
perfect tabernacle not made with hands of men but pitched by the Lord.(v2;9:11)
(ii)High Priest:The priesthood of Jesus Christ is better than the Levitical priesthood.(7:11)The law made men who have infirmities as high priests. But the word of oath makes the Son who is consecrated evermore as high priest.(7:28).The high priests under the law offered sacrifices daily first for their sins and then for the people.(7:27)
Jesus Christ is holy, blameless,
undefiled and separate from sinners.(7:26).He offered Himself once for all for the sins of all men.(7:27).He did no sin.He knew no sin.In Him there was no sin. There is no need of any sacrifice for Him.Jesus Christ sat on the right hand of the throne of the majesty in the heavens.(v1;10:12)But the priests under the law stand daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices.(10:11)[The temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D.70 by Titus (after the epistle of Hebrews has been written and circulated. The temple existed at the time of circulation)]
(iii)Sacrifices:The priests under the law offered animal sacrifices which can not take away the sin.
(9:12;10:11)Jesus Christ offered His own blood.(9:14)
(iv)Better Promises:The Old Covenant was weak and unprofitable.
(7:18).It has to be changed.(v7;
7:12).The Old Covenant was insufficient. The New Covenant is faultless.(v7)It is established on better promises.(v6)Jesus Christ is the mediator of the better Covenant as He has obtained a more excellent ministry.(v6)
2)Two Covenants:God gave the first Covenant to the Israelites after their deliverance from Egypt. But they were not faithful.(v9)God pronounced judgment on them and they had to be under Babylonian Captivity for 70 years.Jeremiah was a prophet of exile. He has prophesied in Jer.31:31-34 about the New Covenant. Those prophesies were fulfilled in Christ(Heb.
8:10-13;10:15-17)
a)Seven aspects of the New Covenant as described in Jer.31:31-34.
(i)I will put my law in thy inward parts.(ii)....write it in their hearts. (iii)I will be their God.
(iv)They shall be My people.(v)They shall teach no more everyman his neighbours, and everyone his brother, saying,Know the Lord, for they shall know Me from the least of them unto the greatest of them.(vi)I will forgive their iniquity.(vii)I will remember their sins no more.
b)Seven aspects of the New Covenant as described in Heb.8:10-11)
(i)I will put my laws into their mind.(ii)...write them in their hearts.(iii)I will be them a God.
(iv)They shall be to Me My people.(v)They shall not teach everyone his brother, saying,Know the Lord, for all shall know Me,from the least to the greatest.(vi)I will be merciful to their unrighteousness.(vii)Their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
3)Application:
(i)The words of Jeremiah were the words of the Holy Spirit.(Jer.
31:31-34;Heb.10;15;I Pet.1:21)
(ii)We are the temple of the Holy Spirit(I Cor.3:16,17;6:19)
(iii)The Holy Spirit will teach us all truth.(John.16:13; I John.2:27)
(iv)We are covenant people.(Deut.
8:18;Gal.3:29).All the promises of God in Christ are yea and in Him Amen unto the glory of God by us.God has sealed us,and given us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.(II Cor.1:21,22)
4)Conclusion:(v13)
When a new and improved model of motor cycle is introduced and when it becomes popular, the old model becomes out of date and will be no more in use.It becomes necessary for the Old Covenant has to be changed.(v7;7:12)God has made the first covenant old and and obsolete. It becomes out of date and no longer in use.
